Nick Jonas Talks Golden Globe Nomination: 'I'm Floored To Be Honest'

Nick Jonas was dead asleep on Monday morning (December 11), exhausted from his recent return from a European and South American promo tour for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle when a friend showed up at his house, knocked on the door and thrust a phone into his hand.

"My manager was on the phone and he informed me and I think I called just about everyone I know," a still-stunned Jonas tell Billboard about how he found out about his first Golden Globe nomination for his co-writing of the song "Home" from the animated film Ferdinand.

"I looked at at my phone and saw that I missed calls from the director Carlos [Saldanha], and then I called my parents, my brothers and a bunch of other friends and of course Justin and we both just screamed on the phone and were so excited."

The Justin in this case was his co-writer, Justin Tranter (Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber) who earlier in the day told Billboard: "I’m beyond honored! A Grammy nomination for 'Issues,' and now a Golden Globe nomination for 'Home,' how is life even real? 'Home' is so special to me because as a young queer kid I was bullied in the worst ways possible at school, but at home I always felt so safe and celebrated. Working with Nick Jonas is always fucking fabulous and I love seeing him get the recognition he deserves for his real deal talent."

The 75th annual Golden Globes will take place on Jan. 7, and until then, Jonas says he's just going to try and wrap his head around his latest honor, which he's particularly proud of since it comes for a song that is so close to his heart.

"I'm floored to be honest and I don't know exactly how to process it all," he says. "I'm 12 years into my career now and at some point you think, 'I know how to emotionally process these things.' But this is a whole new adventure in my life." For Jonas, 25, the nomination is doubly special because "Home" is about a subject near and dear to both himself and Tranter: being recognized and accepted for who you are.

"Home/ No more running/ I'm good knowing that I belong/ Happy to call this home/ I got loving inside this island/ Don't care who knows it," he sings on the track, which also featured lyrical help from Nick Monson. Jonas says that Tranter is one of his all-time favorite collaborators, and that he instantly felt a kinship with the former Semi-Precious Weapons singer when they walked into a room together and started talking about the things that make them feel most accepted and loved. That brainstorming resulted in the perfect track to accompany the movie about a lovable, big-hearted, but misunderstood bull who gathers a team of friends to help him return home.

"He [Tranter] mentioned his family and I also talked about my family, my loved ones and the idea of home became a theme," says Jonas, who promised that he will share the good feelings and celebrate with his former bandmate siblings Joe and Kevin instead of waving the first in the family honor in their faces. But, he jokes, "it is a good thing to have in my back pocket should I ever need it."

After seeing some of the footage from the film, Jonas says he really took to heart the story, which led to a very quick creative spark for the songwriting team. "Once Justin and I just locked in on the creative it was like just picking it out from the universe and pulling it down," he says. "It seems like the really special ones have been that way."

As a huge fan of movie music icons, such as seven-time Globe winner Alan Mencken (The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Aladdin), the Globe nomination is doubly special for Jonas because he got to be part of a huge creative time on the film that was "telling a story that's bigger than just you. The idea of being part of so many creative voices in the mix and being able to contribute makes it really special and makes it a team as opposed to an isolated thing."

Tranter also shared his excitement over Twitter this morning:

Jonas' dad and his Ferdinand family were pretty psyched as well.

The nomination is the kick-off to another huge year for Jonas, who will attend the Jumanji premiere in Los Angeles on Monday night, then fly to New York for more promotion before hitting Jingle Ball shows in Atlanta and Florida and performing on New Year's Rockin' Eve. Following the Globes, Jonas has cleared time to set up the new album he's finished, the follow-up to 2016's Last Year Was Complicated.
