Protesters Stage 'Eat-In' At Train Station After Cop Detains Man For Eating

A group of about 30 protesters staged an "eat-in" at the Embarcadero BART station in San Francisco, California, after a black man was detained for eating a breakfast sandwich on the platform.

Officials defended their decision to handcuff and cite Bill Gluckman because state law forbids people from eating or drinking on paid platforms at train stations. They also said that Gluckman was uncooperative with the officer and refused to give his name. He was ultimately released and given a citation for eating on the platform.

After the video of Gluckman getting handcuffed went viral, protesters decided to host a “Brunch on Bart” rally on the platform. District 8 BART Director Janice Li attended the rally and brought her own lunch. She told ABC 7 that while she understands eating on the platform is illegal, she does not believe it makes sense to use police resources to actively enforce the law, which is routinely ignored by riders.

"I realize some things are illegal with our penal code, but I want to be mindful of how we're using resources to enforce our system," said Li.
