Lewis Capaldi returned to a U.S. stage after a years-long hiatus on Thursday evening (July 10).
The globally-embraced pop artist took the stage as part of the 107.5 River on the Rooftop free summer concert series, hosted at Skydeck at Assembly Food Hall in Nashville, Tennessee. Special guests TOOSII and Hunter Metts opened the show before Capaldi’s highly-anticipated performance. The packed crowd at the rooftop venue loudly sang along with Capaldi, 28, as he performed some of the most defining hits of his career. Capaldi’s set included “Before You Go,” “Forget Me,” “Bruises,” “Survive” — his most recent ballad, which arrived on June 27 — “Hold Me While You Wait” and “Someone You Loved.”
Capaldi’s return to Music City arrived shortly after his performance at Glastonbury Festival on June 28. He said at that time that it was “so good to be back” on stage after the two-year break, though he declined to speak to the audience too much during the emotional moment. “Genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, it means the f***ing world to me that everyone’s here.” It was a powerful moment after Capaldi, who was diagnosed with Tourettes in 2022, took a break from the spotlight “for the foreseeable future” in 2023 to focus on his health. The Scottish singer-songwriter recently shared that “therapy has been such a massive part of my last two years, a massive part of the reason I've been able to be a musician again. I feel like if I can be a part of sharing that with other people, why not?” Capaldi donated 734,000 hours of free therapy to others.
Capaldi recently admitted he “didn’t expect” his U.K. and Ireland summer tour dates to sell out “at all.” He “genuinely had no idea what to expect after taking a break for so long so be seeing this tour sell out faster than any tour i’ve ever played is the most incredible surreal feeling ❤️ thank you to every single one of you who got a ticket and i’m very sorry to any of you who wanted to come and missed out this time. there won’t be any other shows for now, want to make sure I don’t push myself too far too soon. means more than ya know how many of you were waiting to get tickets this morning,” he wrote in a caption on Instagram earlier this week.
Though he doesn't have additional Nashville or U.S. shows listed at the time of publication on Friday (July 11), “I’ll be back soon,” Capaldi assured concertgoers at his River on the Rooftop show on Thursday night. “I’ll be back very, very soon.”
