More than 23 million people are under winter storm warnings as multiple regions of the United States are forecast to get heavy snow and ice, the National Weather Service Prediction Center announced on its X account Friday (December 26) morning.
"Over 23 million people are under winter storm warnings as a result of the impending post-Christmas winter storm, most of whom are within the greater New York metropolitan area. Note that Central Park NY has not measured 4 or more inches of snow since Jan 7, 2022!" the post states.
The National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center shared a later post noting that "Accumulating ice from the upper Midwest to the Great Lakes and into Pennsylvania today before reaching the northern Mid-Atlantic tonight; moderate to heavy snow tonight across southern New England."
The storm is expected to move through the Northeast Friday afternoon with origins traceable to California earlier in the week. The brunt of the storm is expected to occur at around 8:00 p.m. local time and continue through 1:00 a.m. Saturday (December 27) with light snowfall, but little to no accumulations present through the midday, according to ABC 7 Eyewitness News.
An estimated 4 to 8 inches of snow is expected for New York City and nearby areas, while the heaviest bands are expected in the Catskills, Poconos, the Hudson Valley and northernmost New Jersey ranging between 8 to 12 inches.
